When I'm intentionally walking in the shadows then my shots definitely reflect that. With that in mind I've had much more success with street photography using my 50mm, that focal length seems well suited to walking/shooting. What lens do you prefer when you're out and about?

Re: Reflections

Thanks Paula, I really appreciate your kind words.

Re: Catching A Moment

Who is that hot lady? :-)

Re: Reflections

I think the real key is to never try to hide... never try to stand far away with a long telephoto. This will make you look far more suspicious and creepy than walking around and taking photos out in the open. It also gives the resulting photos a bit of creepy edge since you can usually tell when someone was hiding or using a long telephoto.

For me, really good street documentary is about being out in the open and amongst the life you're recording, experiencing it and being right there in that moment. I think all street photographers struggle with getting the balance of being noticed and taking a true candid moment. Personally I'm still fighting that battle and some days it works and some days it doesn't. When I shoot street documentary I just stand right out there. I usually stand still, I look through my camera at all times (again from the hip can upset people and seem creepy). I try to make it seem as if I'm just taking a photo of the scene and not focusing on anyone in particular.

Something I read recently that has helped me immensely is I resist the urge to take the camera from my face the second I've taken the photo, sometimes I'll snap again or I'll just wait for my subjects to pass by and then take it down and look if I need to. This has really changed the things I can snap up, and then if people do look at me, I smile, I try to be friendly, I engage them for a second and move on.

I remember when I was in Tokyo it was difficult because as a pale white person we'll never blend in, but sometimes I think the key is to forget about trying to blend in... after all you could just be a tourist documenting your travels! Most people are rarely mad just simply curious what you could possibly taking a photo of!

Okay, I have rambled a lot. I found your website via flickr and your colours and control of light are beautiful. Stick with the street documentary, we all have a lot to learn. Every day I'm out there I'm learning new things.

Re: Bloedows

Two Thumbs up for your blog !
I REALLY appreciate your blog about Tokyo !, very good looking..
